The Ultimate Online Guide to Norse Mythology and Religion

The weather is getting colder, the days are getting darker, and sinister ravens are wheeling through the sky to warn us of coming doom or it feels that way, at least. The time has never been better to read some excellent fiction based on the myths and legends of the frozen north. Norse Mythology is a bit more mainstream these days, what with Thor and Loki palling around with all the other good Marvel boys up on the big Disney screen, but there's a lot more to viking lore than what you've seen in the movies. Here are a few books that incorporate the legends of the Norsemen, from thunder gods to forest trolls, for a magically charged winter read. Some of these books are straight up retellings of the most interesting Norse myths.

The stories of Thor, Odin and Loki are familiar to most of us. Many people know that the Norse gods fought against giants and were ultimately betrayed by Loki the trickster. The end of the world and the death of the gods in a grim battle called Ragnarok has also found its way into popular culture. Ideas taken from Norse mythology are frequently found in modern fantasy and science fiction—such as elves, dwarfs and undead warriors rising from an unquiet grave, for example. Norse mythology is rich. Norse mythology is rich in adventure and ideas about creation, death and the afterlife.

  1. There are so many books on Norse mythology out there, especially at the beginner level, that if you were to make a pile with one copy of each it would probably reach all the way up to Asgard itself.
