The series describes an alternative history in which African people had gained a technological and organisational advantage over the European people , rather than the other way around, with Africans having made Europeans their slaves. The series takes place in an alternative 21st-century Britain. At the time of the series, slavery had been abolished for some time, but segregation, similar to the Jim Crow Laws, continues to operate to keep the crosses dark-skinned people in control of the noughts lighter-skinned people. An international organisation, the Pangaean Economic Community, exists. Seeming to be similar to the United Nations in scope but similar to the European Union in powers, it is playing a role in forcing change by directives and boycotts.

Malorie Blackman's Noughts & Crosses series (Olivia D Hinds' Book Review) - 016 SOMAD Global

Noughts and Crosses Series

This series reverses the way that things actually happened in this world. It takes the way that whites enslaved the blacks and envisions a world where the blacks enslaved the whites. It includes novels and a novella. This is a world that features an alternate universe where Pangaea is still intact and humans evolved from there. The barriers are gone, and the Africans are able to develop better technology and have better organization over all of the Europeans. In this world, the Europeans became the slaves of the Africans, rather than the other way around. When the first novel starts, the end to slavery has begun, but there is still a segregation that is along the same lines of Jim-Crow that keeps the Crosses in control over the Noughts.

What Malorie Blackman has always done so brilliantly is put the minority front and centre, both in society and politics. Sephy is a Cross: she lives a life of privilege and power. But she's lonely, and burns with injustice at the world she sees around her. Callum is a nought: he's considered to be less than nothing - a blanker, there to serve Crosses - but he dreams of a better life. They've been friends since they were children, and they both know that's as far as it can ever go.

Chapter 79 - Noughts and Crosses - Malorie Blackman

Malorie Blackman's ground-breaking, award winning series charts the lives and loves of generations as it takes on race and equality with breath-taking drama and heart wrenching sadness. Set in an alternate reality, where the inferior Noughts live as second class citizens in a world run by Crosses, the four books explore the violent politics of a unstable world, and the ordinary lives caught up in in its terror. Beginning with Noughts and Crosses - and the romance of Seph and Callum - and ending with Double Cross, it is a gripping sequence, and an important, relevant story for our time. Can two wrongs ever make a right? Sephy is a Cross - the daughter of a top politician and a member of the ruling class.
