Teun A. After earlier work on generative poetics, text grammar, and the psychology of text processing, his work since has taken a more critical perspective and deals with discursive racism, news in the press, ideology, knowledge and context. He is the author of several books in most of these areas, and edited The Handbook of Discourse Analysis four volumes, the introductory book Discourse Studies two volumes, as well as the reader The Study of Discourse five volumes, He is currently completing a new interdisciplinary study in two volumes on the theory of context, and planning a new book on discourse and knowledge. Van Dijk, who holds two honorary doctorates, has lectured widely in many countries, especially Latin America. For a list of publications, recent articles, resources for discourse studies and other information, see www.

Since the s the multidisciplinary study of discourse has become increasingly popular in the humanities, as well as the cognitive, social and political sciences. This new cross-discipline offers many sophisticated quantitative and especially qualitative methods for the explicit and systematic analysis of text and talk, including the analysis of syntax, semantics, pragmatics, narrative, argumentation, style, corpora, metaphor, ideology, and multimodal analysis of images, among others. These methods have also been applied the fields of the study of migration, ethnic relations, minorities and racism.

Acknowledgements vi Preface vii. If we define Critical Discourse Studies CDS as a scholarly movement specifically interested in theory formation and critical analysis of the discursive reproduction of power abuse and social inequality, a detailed examination of the concept of power is a central task of CDS. Yet, as is the case for many fundamental notions of the social sciences, the notion of power is as complex as it is fuzzy. Not surprisingly, a vast number of books and articles have been dedicated to the analysis of this central concept in many disciplines. It is therefore imperative that I focus on those dimensions of power that are directly relevant to the study of language use, discourse and communication. For exam- ple, how do a specific intonation, a pronoun, a headline, a topic, a lexical item, a metaphor, a colour or a camera angle, among a host of other semi- otic properties of discourse, relate to something as abstract and general as power relations in society? That is, we somehow need to relate typical micro-level properties of text, talk, interaction and semiotic practices to typical macro-level aspects of society such as groups or organizations and their relationships of domination.
