Film Review: ‘Book Club’
Turns out that the steamy bestseller simply serves as an ice-breaker. Instead, this fairly laugh-packed comedy aims to address the desire for intimate companionship in older adults, an increasingly topical issue as more Americans live into their nineties. Nelson deserves a good sport medal. But it generally strives to maintain the dignity of its seasoned cast while making hay off of their collective chemistry. He also is no fool, since he has a woman sharing in the writing and producing duties — Erin Simms , a fellow Redford alum.

Book Club is a American romantic comedy film directed by Bill Holderman, in his directorial debut, and written by Holderman and Erin Simms. It stars Diane Keaton , Jane Fonda , Candice Bergen , and Mary Steenburgen as four friends who read Fifty Shades of Grey as part of their monthly book club , and subsequently begin to change how they view their personal relationships. Four women have attended a monthly book club for 30 years, bonding over the suggested literature. Vivian, who owns and builds hotels, runs into Arthur, a man whose marriage proposal she turned down 40 years before. They begin a flirtation, but Vivian has always refused to settle down because she enjoys her independence. Diane is recently widowed, and her daughters would like her to move closer to them in Arizona because they perceive her to be in danger because she's living alone.
Nelson but wishes he were more adventurous; and Sharon Bergen , a Federal judge who bade good riddance to romance after divorcing Tom Ed Begley Jr. Once the quartet dives into E. Diane finds herself wooed by a dashing pilot Andy Garcia , even as her overprotective daughters Alicia Silverstone, Katie Aselton demand she move from Southern California to be near them in Arizona. On a dare, Sharon braves the world of online dating, meeting prospects played by Richard Dreyfuss and Wallace Shawn. More attention seems to have been paid to the luxe settings and clothes on display here than to the script by director Bill Holderman and co-writer Erin Simms. Yet even while stammering out and tittering over truncated excerpts, the characters and their film barely seem to notice that those books are about kinky sex. That the female leads ranging indistinguishably from age 65 to 80 all look fabulous is of course an integral part of that sales pitch.
